MLS Area 06

MLS Area 06. Buechel, Highview, Okolona and Fern Creek, KY. lay on the southern metropolitan area of Louisville, KY. They surround Highway I-265, with Highway 150 cutting through the middle of the surrounded areas.

Buechel started developing in 1790 when George Hikes built its first sawmill, grist mill and wool-processing machine. Buechel got its name 80 years later when John Buechel bought a tavern-hotel (a house that was between Louisville and Bardstown) on Bardstown Rd. and set up a post office.

Highview is located between Fern Creek and Okolona. It began to thrive between 1950 and 1960. Springmill and Hollow Creek are also a part of the Highview area.

Okolona was first settled by farmers from Pennsylvania and Virginia in the late 18th century. First, called Lone Oak in the late 19th century however that name was already taken by a Post Office near Paducah. Therefore, the name was rearranged by the town, and it is now Okolona. Okolona sits as the exact same elevation as downtown Louisville, KY. and is 10 miles away. It is one of the city’s largest shopping areas in the south-end home to the Jefferson mall.

Fern Creek is a historical community with the oldest structure being a log home from 1789. The earliest road through the area (Stage Road) became the Louisville and Bardstown turnpike. It was intially called Stringtown but eventually turned into Fern Creek by the 1870’s.
